Good Lyrics: Beautiful Skin

I wouldn’t say I’m the biggest fan of rap and hip hop, although I do enjoy it on occasion. I mainly like it when it’s either funny or has a positive message, or a good chorus/melody (is that what they call a “hook?”). Every few years I put this song on repeat in my car for a few days, which I have done recently, and drive around town so people can laugh at my white ass in my Subaru rocking some mad bass, yo. LOL. Typically I dislike rap because it’s usually disrespectful to one or more groups of people (in my opinion), and I have a big problem with that. But this song is all about respect for women, and I love it.

Beautiful Skin (click to listen)
by Goodie Mob

This particular song right here is dedicated to the black woman
And it doesn’t pertain to all black women
because some of y’all disrespect y’all selves
because you don’t know who you are in the first place.

This is out of respect to women period
Word up

I’m quite single
And occasionally I mingle
But aside from all the rest
She sparks my interest
No ma’am, I don’t know you
Just offering the common respect I feel I owe you
Also, some conversation, companionship
Common ground and common sense
There’s no such thing as coincidence
In me finding you here
And I really hate screaming in your ear
So, some other time, OK?
(I waited a day.)

Hello, this is Carlito
From a couple of days ago
You sound tired
Forgive me if I call you too late
But what better time to relate my state?
Where could I begin?
Has anyone ever told you have beautiful skin?
You’re more than welcome
What do you desire within?

I just want to be
There’s no need to put titles on you and me
Those are limitations
Living and learning are our only obligations
Equality, honesty, independence
Intelligence, emotion and devotion
Humbly seeking to hear God when he’s speaking to us

At one time my mind just couldn’t conceive
A woman had to dress a certain way to believe
But, in the same breath, allow me to say
That if you believe, young lady, you wouldn’t dress that way
And I was attracted to your class
I couldn’t see all your ass
And I was very content
You deserved every compliment

Our differences make us the same
You gotta have some game, or
You ain’t even gonna be able to take care of yourself
I love when I look at you, I see my reflection
So I offer my love, affection and protection
Shorty, you dead fine
But the bottom line is, you still my sister

Well, I say
You’re my beginning, my end
You’re my sister, lover, and friend
God is your light from within
It shines from your beautiful skin
What they say ’bout you ain’t true
There’s no me if there is no you
I hope that you understand
You got to respect yourself before I can

I met you and y’all knew
Saw you again on Marietta
Downtown Atlanta
Checking your long legs, got me smirking
Fixed me dinner one night, candles lit
Thought you was slick in the beginning
But it turned out you wouldn’t lie
Looked me in my eye

I listened
Sucked it up, pushed on
We made amends
Both sides clicked, true friends
Since then, years done gone by
Brought a baby girl into this world
Made our parents grandfolk

Household with no hope
Took care of ye, you me
When shit got put out on the curb
Closer than the skin on the back of my hand
Through the thick and thin
We can win
Beautiful black skin

Well, I say
You’re my beginning, my end
You’re my sister, lover, and friend
God is your light from within
It shines from your beautiful skin
What they say ’bout you ain’t true
There’s no me if there is no you
I hope that you understand
You got to respect yourself before I can

No need to compete
With the music loud
Or stairs cold
Put on a scale
Of one to ten, you’re a twelve
I chose her over jail and hell
Originally from ATL

Compatible souls come together
Under bad weather
To discuss the mistrust
Amongst the so-called
Good in every woman
How I wish this was true
I deal with facts only
Already done cloned me
Why I sang the blues

When there’s only one God that watches over our every step
I need his help
When I’m walking
Looking for the right female
I can’t tell sometimes
They tell me the devil’s coming humble in his approach
Spontaneous with the game
Caught the naive of a girl falling for the OK
Let the pistol smoke the one you live by
Die by
Examples of how relationships can be

I rolls the dice
Taking a chance at crapping out
Like today boy
I lost one of my best hips
Natural thick lips
No animal fat implants
Wide load
This daughter working at the airport
19 years old
Worth more than her weight in gold
But it was all my fault

So don’t cry, understand
And down the line I want you back
But the feeling ain’t mutual
Just promise me you’ll find a new man
That’s bout some business
Hope she finds what her was looking for
Like a dream to my end
I wanted to be more than friends
Beautiful black skin

Well, I say
You’re my beginning, my end
You’re my sister, lover, and friend
God is your light from within
It shines from your beautiful skin
What they say ’bout you ain’t true
There’s no me if there is no you
I hope that you understand
You got to respect yourself before I can.

Good Lyrics: Ripple

Friend of mine posted this on Facebook the other day, and it really started my cloudy, overcast Friday right today.

Ripple
by Jerry Garcia & Robert Hunter

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music?
Would you hold it near, as it were your own?

It’s a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they’re better left unsung
I don’t know, don’t really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of man

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go, no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall, you fall alone
If you should stand, then who’s to guide you?
If I knew the way, I would take you home

Good Lyrics: When the Circus Comes

This is one of those songs that I forget how much I love until I hear it again. It’s a sit-in-the-car-and-wait-til-it-ends kind of song. It makes me feel things I don’t particularly want to feel. That’s a good song.

When the Circus Comes (click to play)
by Los Lobos (but also covered excellently by Phish)

Could have had a chance to get out of this mess
The time that you came and the day that you left
Could have had a chance
Could have had a chance

Never thought I could make it this far
With a pain in my soul and a hole in my heart
Never thought I could
Never thought I could

But when the lights are turning round
The wheels are flowing on the ground
The day I burned this whole place down
When the circus comes to town

Carved your name out on that tree
Scratched mine out right in front of me
Didn’t mean that much
Didn’t mean that much

But when the lights are turning round
The wheels are flowing on the ground
The day I burned this whole place down
When the circus comes to town

Good Lyrics: Kind Veggie Burritos

Kind Veggie Burritos
by Steve McMurry

One day back in late ’91
I was looking for somewhere to go
When a buddy of mine
he dropped me a dime and said,
“Come see the Grateful Dead show.”

Well, we pulled up to the coliseum
and as far as I could see
it was white tourist shirts
and boys wearing skirts saying,
“Dude, can you miracle me?”

Well, the band, they were jumping
had the whole place twisting and twirling
We had us great fun
but when the music was done,
I thought I heard somebody call

He called out,
“Kind veggie burritos!
Wrapped up and ready to go!”
Made fresh with love,
so let’s offer the dove
for the kind veggie burrito!

Oh, we walked along for a while
to the edge of the big parking lot
and behind this old van
stood a rail-y young man
he was making ’em
and making ’em hot!

He said,
“We all camped out here last night,
but the cops, they just won’t let us be.
But my brother’s in jail,
and you can help post his bail
by buying just a couple of these!”

Just a couple of
Kind veggie burritos
Wrapped up and ready to go
Made fresh with love
so let’s offer the dove
for the kind veggie burrito.

Good Lyrics: Wooden Ships

I try not to do too many song lyric posts in a row, but this one goes right with Revolution. I am on a revolution/ counter culture kick right now. Okay, who am I kidding? That’s every day. But this song is awesome sauce. Good morning, America!

Wooden Ships
by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (obviously one of my all time favorite bands)

If you smile at me, I will understand
Cause that is something everbody everywhere does
in the same language.

I can see by your coat, my friend
you’re from the other side
There’s just one thing I got to know
Can you tell me please, who won?
Say, can I have some of your purple berries
Yes, I’ve been eating them for six or seven weeks now,
haven’t got sick once.
Probably keep us both alive.

Wooden ships on the water, very free and easy
Easy, you know the way it’s supposed to be
Silver people on the shoreline, let us be
Talking about very free and easy

Horror grips us as we watch you die
All we can do is echo your anguished cries
Stare as all human feelings die
We are leaving
You don’t need us.

Go, take your sister then, by the hand
lead her away from this foreign land
Far away, where we might laugh again
We are leaving
You don’t need us.

And it’s a fair wind, blowing warm
Out of the south over my shoulder
Guess I’ll set a course and go…

Good Lyrics: Blues Traveler

Look Around
by Blues Traveler

You’ll get no answer from me
About what I want or what I get
Brave enough to speak, afraid to see
Confuse the issue til you forget
And I’ve tried to finally decide why
I’m in your face

And if you can’t already tell
I am unable to let things go
I’m told I do it very well
But more important
you should know that all the same
You’ve got no one to blame but yourself
If you call that a waste

Cause it ain’t me
That’s been hurting you inside
And if you’ve learned
You’ll know much more than I
That you’re gonna have to go and find it
You’ll have to dig beneath the ground
You’ll have to unearth every ugly stone
That kept you on your own
And simply put them down
You’re gonna have to look around

You’ll get no answer from me
About what I get or want I want
That was enough to make her leave
She’s not the first one come and gone
And I don’t care
Buyer beware of me
‘Cause it might get rough

If you want peace, then live alone
If you wanna hide, then find a stage
Each a brief but perfect home
To accomodate your rage
And sometimes
In the midst of all my crimes
I feel lost
Or have I lost enough?

Remaining friends
Remind me as they say
It’s up to you
The things you throw away
And still you’re gonna have to go and find it
You’ll have to dig beneath the ground
You’ll have to unearth every ugly stone
That’s kept you on your own
And simply put them down
You’re gonna have to look around.

Good Lyrics: Collective Soul

Shine
by Collective Soul

Give me a word
Give me a sign
Show me where to look
Tell me what will I find
Lay me on the ground
Fly me in the sky
Show me where to look
Tell me what will I find
Oh, heaven let your light shine down

Love is in the water
Love is in the air
Show me where to look
Tell me will love be there
Teach me how to speak
Teach me how to share
Teach me where to go
Tell me will love be there
Oh, heaven let your light shine down

Good Lyrics: Jimi Hendrix

Wind Cries Mary
by Jimi Hendrix

After all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street
Footprints dressed in red
And the wind whispers Mary

A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterday’s life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife
And the wind, it cries Mary

The traffic lights they turn up blue tomorrow
And shine their emptiness down on my bed
The tiny island sags downstream
‘Cause the life that lived is, is dead
And the wind screams Mary

Will the wind ever remember
The names it has blown in the past
And with his crutch, it’s old age, and it’s wisdom
It whispers no, this will be the last
And the wind cries Mary

“Satisfy My Soul”
by Bob Marley

Satisfy my soul, babe
Satisfy my soul.

You’re like cool water
to my thirsty soul
I said,
said you keep me warm
when the times are cold.

Strange desire
I have for your love

Good vibrations
bring love and affection

All I need is good vibrations
and I”ll bring love and affection.
